What an amazing country, such friendliness in village and city alike, an opportunity for adventure in diverse landscapes and a very safe country.
We traveled with our 3 year old (Oskar was loved everywhere we went!) and visited Oman in January, during which time the very loved Sultan Qaboos bin Said passed away initiating a period of mourning and we also experienced severe flash floods. Don’t let that put you off though! In this beautiful country, these were our Top Ten for Oman:
- Snorkelling in the fish rich waters of the Daymaniyat Islands.
- Wild camping under the stars, by the sea or in the mountains in a stargazer roof top tent.
- Exploring with 4×4 the vastly different landscapes of Oman, from sand dunes and desert to rocky mountains and “moonscapes” to Wadi’s and palm trees.
- Experiencing the Arabian nights in a tented desert camp in the Wahiba Sands.
- Splashing around in emerald wadi’s with Doctor fish nibbling at your toes.
- Getting lost in Muscat’s Muttrah Souq.
- Learning more in the modest but informative and warren like “Misfat Museum Gallery” in the beautiful mountain village of Misfat Al Abriyyin.
- Exploring the Nizwa Fort and Souq.
- Experiencing some of the decadence of Oman in the beach front resorts, including Afternoon Tea at Al Bustan Palace.
- Meeting locals in small villages, and the hospitality of local families while sitting out the passing of a flash flood.
And as always, sampling the local food and drink. Our favourites included: chicken biriyani, fish masala, hummus, Paratha, babganoush, fresh watermelon and pineapple juices and last but not least Omani Coffee (coffee with cardamom) with dates. More on this in a separate post coming soon!
